The year was 1971. Five years earlier, James “Jim” Slyman had graduated from Carson-Newman University with a major in business and a minor in economics. Having worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) since graduation, Jim had a vision for a business of his own.
Since high school, the Knoxville native had been fascinated with real estate. He finished his last day at TVA on a Friday, and opened Slyman Real Estate & Auction in the back room of a Hallmark card shop the following Monday.
More than 50 years later, Slyman Auction manages profitable auctions across the United States. The firm is an integral part of Knoxville’s real estate landscape with the distinction of having held auctions in every West Knoxville subdivision.
